Remove Marble Etching With The Marble Refinishing Kit

So, your marble is etched?

Marble looks beautiful just about everywhere you put it.

Unfortunately, after some wear and tear you might start to notice rings or watermarks on your marble surfaces that can diminish the look and natural beauty of your stone.

Professional refinishing and restoration is a much cheaper solution to replacement but what about for those smaller etch marks you want to remove yourself?

Learn how to remove marble etching with The Marble Refinishing Kit.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: Before attempting any repairs, be sure it is in fact etching and not staining. There’s an important difference! Learn how to diagnose an etch from a stain here.

How it works

Treating etch marks on marble countertops is a craft!

We’ve made learning the craft easy with our Marble Repair Kit. This do-it-yourself kit comes with everything you need to remove marble etching in a simple 3-step process.

With just a few sheets of paper towel, a cup of water and about 15 minutes of labour you can restore the look of you marble countertop! Learn more about Marble Refinishing Kit here.

Kit contents:

  • Marble polishing paste
  • Two white nylon polishing pads
  • Two grey nylon sanding pads
  • Pad holder
  • Wooden Stir Stick

Simple 3-step process

1)
Clean the affected area with a wet sponge and dry it with a paper towel to wipe away any dirt or dust on the marble countertop.

2)
Wet the affected area until it is entirely covered in water. Attach the dark sanding pad to the pad holder. Sand the affected area by applying moderate pressure in a circular motion (50 to 100 circles). Ensure to sand 0.5″ or 1 cm beyond the etched area.

Clean the affected area with a sponge and dry it with a paper towel or microfiber cloth. Check the area: is it still completely dull? If there is still etching, repeat this step.

3)
Apply polishing paste. Wet the area with a sponge again. Attach the white polishing pad to the pad holder this time. Apply 1/2 tsp of polish paste per 16″ (4″ x 4″), and dilute the paste in water with wooden stir stick. Leave the small polishing rocks in the water.

Polish the area by applying high pressure in a circular motion (50 to 100 circles). Polish 1-2 cm beyond the sanded area. Clean the area with a sponge, spray some R-311 Countertop Spray and dry it with a paper towel or microfiber cloth. Check the area is smooth and shinny. If necessary, repeat this step.

Voila! If the etches are gone then your work is done.

If you continue to notice etching then try repeating the 3-step process. When there is no improvement in the appearance of the marble etching, it’s possible it could be a stain, or perhaps the etch is too deep for DIY applications.

If after 2-3 attempts you still notice etch markings, then it is time to call the professionals.

The Marble Clinic services the Greater Toronto Area and will happily provide a free consultation.

I have white marble in need of some TLC. It’s antique Italian marble living room table top. I’m scared to touch it but also scared of the price I’d have to pay to get someone else with experience to do it. I’m a student and on a very low budget. I wish I could post a picture in this comment, but in sum, the table top has etch marks (quite a few now. I bought this table used but my partner and I made it worse in time) as well as it has a few small scratches. It has two… Read more »
