Etching, stains, scrapes and scratches are all avoidable if you take extra care to ensure your floor is protected from pets, guests, and the elements.
Here’s a list of the top five bad habits that can damage your marble floor.
1. Letting ice, snow, mud dry on your floor
People will come in and out, but don’t let them traipse over your floor without using a doormat first.
Leaving, ice, snow and mud to cake and dry on your floor will cause damage and leave permanent marks.
Opt for a sturdy, thick mat that stays in place and doesn’t slip when people walk over it. Leave a rubber mat outside your front door, too, so that guests can scrape off as much snow and mud as possible before entering your home.
2. Using acidic cleaners to clean your floor.
Cleaners such as vinegar and lemon juice may be great options for your health and the environment, but they are bad options for stone floor maintenance.

3. Not cleaning up spills immediately!
Let’s face it, accidents happen.
You’ll want to make sure to clean any spills up immediately. Some liquids can stain your marble floor. If this happens you’ll want to safely remove the stain using poultice. Learn more about this DIY solution here.
To prevent stains, make sure you’re sealing your marble floors at least once per year. We recommend using the 314P Premium Sealer, the highest quality stain protection!
4. Using chairs without protective felt pads
Stone may be solid and long-lasting, but its finish is still vulnerable to scrapes and scratches. Protect your stone floor from chair scrapes with protective pads. These can be found at your local hardware store.
5. Allowing pet urine to dry without quick cleanup.
Your new puppy maybe your best friend, but he’s your stone floor’s worst enemy. The acid from cat and dog urine will cause etching and staining to your floor.
