What is happening
Grout is the weak point in most stone showers and bathroom floors. It soaks up water, soap, and body oils. Over time the joints darken, crumble, grow mould, and let water in behind the tile.
What to look for
Dark lines, or pink, orange, or green mould, that come back after cleaning
Crumbling or missing grout
Cracked or peeling caulk at the tub, bench, and corners
A musty smell, or grout soft enough to scrape out with a fingernail

A marble or travertine shower, where the wrong cleaner can etch the stone
