What is happening
A stain is colour from something that has soaked into the stone. The surface feels the same, but one area looks wet, dark, or discoloured. We draw it back out with a poultice, a paste matched to the type of stain.
What to look for
A darker spot in the shape of the spill (brown, pink, yellow, or rust-orange)
An area that looks permanently wet or greasy
A ring where a plant pot, can, or bottle sat
A smooth surface over the mark, unlike etching

Oil, coffee, and rust stains in granite, drawn out with a poultice and resealed so the next spill soaks in more slowly.
Salt, mud, and oil stains in limestone entries and bathroom floors, lifted out and resealed before the next winter.
Soap, oil, and mineral stains in travertine showers and pool decks, drawn out, refilled where needed, and sealed.
