Challenge
The Whitney Block is a 1920s heritage tower at Queen's Park. Its marble staircases needed new treads that matched the old stone so closely a visitor could not tell old from new. It is also a secure government office, and staff kept working on every floor throughout.
Approach
We screened off one staircase at a time so the offices carried on as normal. The new treads were cut from a single block of marble to match the veining. We filled damaged edges with colour-matched epoxy, then ground and polished the landings to the same finish.
Result
The stairs look as they were designed to, the building never closed, and there is spare stone on site for future repairs.
Good to know
When only some treads have failed, you can replace those and keep the original staircase.
